Yesterday we did film all of the scenes that we were supposed to film. We filmed the park scene and some of the killing scene. In next lessons we will be editing this and making our film titles by adding our names, the schools, the roles we did to make the film, the title and the production companies idents. Above are the pictures that I took from our first day of filming our project.

Filming

Today we are going to start filming for our opening sequence to a thriller movie. We are going to film two important scenes today. One will be the park scene and the other the killing scene. For both the scenes we will need Shelby who is our main actress to be in them which is why filming has taken so long to come to. However if we film both of these today(which we hope to achieve) then we can edit on Monday and Tuesday during lessons and then film the party scene on Thursday and edit throughout the course of the week to have it completed and up to scratch.

Primeval Extract

In our media class we were doing textual analysis and representation of extracts. We as a group of 4 were told to look at a Primeval extract and analysis it. Our main question was to look at how the representation of gender is constructed in the extract. There were four parts of individual noted that we had to look at to answer this question. There were;
  •  Camera shots, Movement and Composition
  • Sound
  • Editing
  • Mise-en-scene
We then had to compare notes and make a PowerPoint presentation on the extract above.

Even though this is in our other media class it is still relevant to this media project as all of the above bullet points are points that I will need to consider for the opening sequence to a thriller to create the atmoshpere and the emotions which need to be conveyed to the audience when watching.

Conventions of a Thriller Film

1. A crime at the core of the narrative (often murder, but not always)
2. A complex narrative structure, with false paths, clues and resolutions
3.A narrative pattern of establishing enigmas (problems) which the viewer expects to be resolved
4.A protagonist who is systematically, disempowered and drawn into a complex web of intrigue by an antagonist.
5.Extraordinary events happening in an ordinary situation
6.Themes of identity
7.Themes of mirroring
8.Themes of voyeurism
9.Protagonist with a "flaw" which is exploited by the antagonist
10.   Titles often reflect an aspect of the protagonist/antagonist's psychological state
11.   There is often a scene near the end of the film in which the protagonist is in peril
12.   Mise-en-Scene which echoes/mirrors the protagonist plight

Sound Effects

This is the punch and thud that we are going to use when louise, who is our killer, is going to hit Billy with one of his football trophy's in the back of the head.

We as a group was also thinking of having a creaking sound either from the door or the stairs which could freak Shelby and Billy got when they are messaging each other. This would build up tension and could flow with the music.

Moby Gratis

Songs we are going to use in our movie
This is the site called Mobygratis.com. We had to use this site to get our music for of thriller coursework as we have to use non copyright songs.

Past Pupils Work

This is the best media coursework about the opening of a thriller movie that I could find on YouTube from past peoples work.

The first scene is a party scene. This gave me a few ideas and inspirations as to what to do for our our media coursework as we are also doing a party scene but inside the house. There was many elements which created the atmosphere of a party scene which was the flashing lights, the tilted camera angles, the frames being speed up and it being blurry which all created this illusion that she is drunk and doesn't know what she is doing. Also I liked how the music was parallel throughout the film from it being rave type in the party scene to quite in the woods apart from the birds, which gives a sinister feel to that particular part, to it being the sound of a ticking clock or a heartbeat as someone or something is just waiting for her and the music builds this up. I also liked the jittery camera frames when she stands up as it gives the audience the feel that she doesn't know what she has done the night before and is waking up with a hangover. There are also close up shots of her in the woods which shows her emotions really well in the film and finally the echos when she is calling out for help show how alone and deserted she is in the woods and this is also emphasised by her facial expressions and body language of terror.

Mise-en-Scene

Mise-en-scene is a French term meaning what id put into the frame during a scene. What is put into or left out of the frame can make a big difference to the signals the audience receives about what sort of film it is and how we are supposed to feel at that point. Therefore the Mise-en-Scene are an indicator of the genre of the film and we can have certain expectations of what is about to happen as the film progresses.

The elements of Mise-en-Scene are;
  • Settings and Props
  • Costume, Hair and Makeup
  • Facial Expressions and Body Language
  • Lighting and Colour
  • Positioning of Characters and Objects within the frame
  • Settings and Props
The settings and props used in a film are just the background to the characters actions and dialogue. Settings and props can manipulate the audience's expectations and often directors will take a different turn. In this scene it is a happy and vibrant atmosphere which will manipulate the audience to feel that particular emotion before something in the plot happens.

  • Costume, Hair and Makeup
All these parts are very important as it can give us an indicator as to the characters personality and social status. It also tells us what time period and culture the film is set in.
In this picture the clothing is dark and the makeup and hair is disturbing so the audience sees him as an evil character.

  • Facial Expressions and Body Language

Facial Expressions and Body Language gives the audience a clear indication of how a character is feeling during the scene.

  • Lighting and Colour
Lighting and Colour can give a particular scene a relistic look or bring out dramatic nature of it. We associate different lighting styles with different genres as well.

  • Positioning of characters and Objects within a frame
This is important as it tells and manipulates the audience into what to concentrate on, what to draw our attention on and what to feel and what the characters are feeling in the scene.
